Opinion is a quick column for when I’ve been getting my think on.

TL;DR

Capping the length of a Warsong Gulch match at 20 minutes in Patch 3.2 will not solve the inherent problems that cause turtling, it will only prevent matches of nightmare length. We need better fixes.

  1. Add a lengthy delay to flag respawns.
  2. Hasten the flag carrier debuff.
  3. Create a mortal strike power up.

A good instance of Warsong Gulch provides more fun than any other battleground, more opportunities for small scale combat, and a greater sense of player efficacy. The down side is that two flag carriers supported by three healers each may never die, ever. BORING, but it can be fixed. Read on. (more…)

Buffing Mages: A Short History

Buffing Mages: A Short History

I am a little disappointed in my Magely Blog colleagues at the moment, it’s all Q to the power of Q.

Sure it’s nerf to cover up the nerf that we noticed while another nerf was being slipped in, but let’s be a bit more positive about this.

What other class can claim such a high level of energy has been expended on it’s one signature (now sadly ignored) spell.

when-turtles-fly

The global economy is in a meltdown, and so are our skills.

Alright enough crap comparisons to the economy, I will stick to crap commentary on WoW.

On of the things I have found recently is how devalued certain skills have become.  I was reminded of this the other day by Part Time Druid, and also by someone else that now escapes me (although Big Bear Butt’s discussion about 360 tanking made me /cry a little inside). Oh found another one from Tobold Seen any sheeps lately?

It just seems that in an effort to make everything playable by everyone, it is all becoming quite… well a bit plain.  Sort of like pre-work life when Granny gave you $5 in your Christmas card and you couldn’t contain your enthusiasm… then you get a job, and you start to look sideways at the stingy old bag (bless her soul – you warlocks keep your filthy soul shards of it!).  Now in reality there is the same emotion and even power behind the gift of the cash (or skill/spell etc), but you can’t help but feeling let down.

AoE

Back before WoLK hit the shops, just before that is, when the 3.0 changes came out, I was jumping from Thunder Bluff in joy.. AoE as a fire Mage became sooo much fun.  It was new and powerful.  Blizzard told us it would be much more important, we couldn’t imagine how AoE was going to make us the Kings & Queens of DPS, but for the time being it was just pure Win! Drawing the short straw: Racial Bonuses

I feel sorry for Gnomes, Draenei, Taurens and Blood elf.  Primarily Gnomes of course!

Why?
They have a racial bonus taken up with something completely useless… profession racial bonuses.

Let’s take a look.

  • Gnome
    * Engineering Specialist : 15 point skill bonus to Engineering (note, this also raises the cap by 15 at each level of Engineering).
  • Draenei
    * Gemcutting : 5 point skill bonus to Jewelcrafting (note, this also raises the cap by 5 at each level of jewelcrafting).
  • Tauren
    * Cultivation : 15 point skill bonus to Herbalism (note, this also raises the cap by 15 at each level of herbalism).
  • Blood elf
    * Arcane Affinity : 10 point skill bonus to Enchanting (note, this also raises the cap by 10 at each level of enchanting).

Yes yes, I hear you Forsaken, Trolls, Orcs, Night elves, Humans and Dwarves screaming out:

If you don’t want +5 to 15 to your skills, then we will take it!

Well, I am of a good mind to just give it to you… actually, you are welcome to my Gnome Engineering skill, cause it’s worth diddly squat to me!

Dailies are the Raw Prawn…

unobtainable-recipes

…and I say:

Don’t come the raw prawn with me mate!

Maybe I have just eaten a batch of Bad Clams, but I am very, very sick of dailies.

Bad Clams make you angry. (more…)

How to: AFK in Raids

How to: AFK in Raids: a noob’s guide to collecting badges

It’s easy to AFK in Battlegrounds, and we all know how, right?
I mean I see enough of it myself, and certainly read enough about it on the blogs.

Everyone loves and AFKer right?

Anyhow, AFKing in a Raid is an Art, requiring special skills and abilities.  It isn’t open to all classes.

  • If you are a tank class, you might as well stop reading.
  • The sole healer? This strategy probably isn’t for you either.

For the rest of you, the DPS classes, primarily the ranged DPS classes, this is a guide on how to rack up the badges and phat loot by AFKing in Raids.

It works for Honor, so why not for badges? (more…)

Post Curator Black Hole

I have discovered this black hole after the Curator in Kara, and I am wondering whether to report it to Blizzard.

Symptoms:

  • Raid one-shots Curator.
  • Divides loots
  • Moves on to next trash.
  • Mmmm player X (and maybe Y) have disconnected.
  • Let’s give them 5 minutes
  • OK 5 minutes have passed, lets clear some more trash and give them another 5 minutes.
  • OK, let’s start LFM, but keep them in the raid until we do – because they might sort out their technical difficulties.
  • Mmm looks like the black hole has struck again! (more…)

Pugged Kara’s like a box of chocolates….

Nightbane down!

I know I have whinged and whined about Kara pugs before, well, I guess not so much about the quality of the puggerswe pick up, although generally there is a big gap between the damage done by the regulars and that done by the puggers.

My biggest issue has always been that, with one 5-6 hour shot per week at Kara, the LF1-2-3M from 8.30 – 10.30 can be a real drag.  Usually if we do fill the party it is with badge gatherers hoping for a 1-shot run of the place in 3 hours, or the dregs of toondom, because we are about to give up.

Well this Friday, it looked like our luck had changed.  (more…)
