Doesn’t mean I do!
Apparently it would take a Call to Arms booty bag, 2 additional levels, duel wielded legendaries and a harem of fair Gnomish beauties if it meant there was a chance tanks had to fight this guy.
Me, I don’t care too much.
There is one thing I really like about this fight.
People expect to fail, so no one gets uptight if they do and they celebrate (for a good half a second) when we take it down.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for other fights.
Rom’ogg Bonecrusher will get you a little sympathy… a little.
You are still a noob if you don’t get your chains down in time, or get away in time, but as long as there are a couple still standing, he will go down and all is forgiven.
For me he can be a pain.
Yes I have the /tar chain macro (It’s on about 4 buttons so I shouldn’t be able to miss), but with my latency, I’m often firing up a cast 1 second after I already died.
Still, blink works wonders and I can normally get away (even if it means blinking with the chains, then dpsing them off)
Asaad is Squidly’s bane.
Gnomeaggedon can jump and cast… in fact I’m not sure if Gnome can cast while standing still since he got mobile scorch, it just doesn’t feel safe… solo leveling will do that to a Gnome.
Squidly on the other had has to stand still for 2,000,000 SECONDS PER CAST… no exaggeration, go on… look it up
Throw in a touch of lag and Asaad’s Static Cling cast bar is a mix of
When the hell am I ever going to cast a spell in this fight
and
Oh hell, I hope this healer can cleanse the cling, otherwise I am once again a Van de Graaff generator… well until I die… again.
There is really only one foe in Cataclysm Heroics that Gnomeaggedon fears.
The Lag Monster!
Ohh actually, I have learned to live with him, no it’s not the Lag Monster.
No it’s not even Corla (prounouced Cooor she’s a hotty la la la)
It’s him!
or is it Me?
Either way, if there is one way to piss a bunch of people off really fast in a REALLY EASY, EVEN A NOBTWADDLE LIKE YOU CAN DO IT fight, it’s to let one of these loose.. actually there are two ways:
- it could be you wiping the party by letting him evolve, or
- it could be you evolving and doing the wiping.
Then to add insult to injury, you get to live while the rest of the party does the “run of cranky”.
Only once in all the times that I have done Blackrock Caverns on heroic have I managed to prevent the Twilight Herald from enraging.
I carefully watched my guildy (Dingo the class confused Warlock.. more on him sometime soon) and moved when he did, and got to the end of the fight beaming!
Even that joy was short lived when I realised the healer was in the beam with me.
My UI, for some unknown reason either doesn’t show when the cooldown expires after 14 seconds, or does it so discreetly that I have never discovered where it is.
I usually manage to get out before I reach 80 the 1st time… but after that, well tanks, get ready to tank my Enraged Twilight Herald!
I did this last night.
As soon as I enraged I apologized.. after all I had lots of time to type while I was on the rampage. I wasn’t the only one to enrage, but I was certainly bore the brunt of the abuse.
Who was that?
The suck on the left
Do better next time!
Yeah sorry about that guys, I’ll do better this time. In fact I always try to do better, so no need to pay out.
I did better the next time, but not well enough. Once again I wasn’t the only one to screw up and at least this time I wasn’t enraged, so I could at least help sort the out issue.
Unfortunately, even though the boss was at only 20% health, the tank decided that if you enraged it, you tank it.
So we wiped on what was a easily recoverable fight…
But the suck screwed up, so the suck left.
Then I went to the next heroic, topped the dps, sheeped and resheeped everything that was mine, counterspelled and spell stole like a pro.
The level of intolerance on individual fights that may cause difficulties for individuals just astounds me.
But then, I’m not sure why I expect anything different. It is well known that people find it hard to empathize with what another person may be going through, to understand that there are circumstances possibly beyond that individual’s control that may effect their behaviour… and that is IRL, not in WoW.
Ah well…
Every god has to have his one vulnerability, and the Twilight Herald’s are mine.

For Corla try running a stock standard ui? Its in the top right for me.
Note for both you and the npc the sound of the beam changes at the right time to move, you could do it without seeing the debuffs at all based of the sound.
Asaad he allways does static cling after a chain lightning, just pick a place on his cast bar to jump. I jump at 2/3(aussie ping) perhaps you need to jump at half.
Ozruk I have to go from his voice cues as tank. When he says that. I have a about 0.5 before he does his run out now announcement. I run 0.5 seconds before he tells me to move and its good. Thanks for not designing for aussie ping blizz.
But anyone suggests you should try for Al’akir in conclave of winds, dont he shares the same mechanics x10. Ok if i go 2 metres to the left I can then go back and through the wall of typhoons then have just enough time to run over the frost(slowing) to get close enough to the boss that I wont be thrown off when i get knocked back.
Ahhh the ol’ standard UI in the custom interface trick… good thinking!
I hadn’t noticed the sound… might have my ambient sounds turned down, or I can’t hear it over my internal dialogue (don’t fail, don’t fail, don’t fail), or maybe it’s just my fit of Tourettes which comes with the fight.
I have been trying to pick the right spot on the cast bar, might start at 2/3 and work down. I don’t worry so much on Gnome as I just blink out and I haven’t run enough on Squid (although he always seems to score this instance)
I go from Orzuk’s voice signals too… the one thing I do really bad is spellsteal too early.. I might get the dot.. ummm sorry for everyone else.
Mmmm OK, I’ll come down with a case of something if I get invited to Al’akir. although raids aren’t too bad, as all of the guild suffers from the lag monster to some extent, so they tend to be understanding.
I hate the lag monster. I don’t know how things are with you but when I’m away working and trying to play over a satlink I’m anywhere between 800-1.5k ms (and only if no one else is hogging the bandwidth). Thankfully I do have a reprieve every 8 weeks when I get to go home (and occasionally get to play between Mrs Runz’ house taskings, it’s my own personal questchain everytime I get home lol) and can play normally.
Sadly people can be very inconsiderate when it comes to the idea that not everyone is running on less than 300ms. I always do my best to explain at the start of every dungeon that I’m laggy so struggle with some interupts or mechanics that require speed. More often than not though I don’t bother with the LFD tool unless I’m home. My guild is very considerate when dealing with my lag suck and whilst it means I’m no longer a raider (except for BH) they will still happily run heroics with me – they just accept that I will constantly fight the boss for a good second or so after they’ve finished.
No joke one boss fight took me nearly seven extra seconds to finish – we’d already received achievements and everyone was congratulating. I popped up on vent to say I was still fighting and if they could wait until my alternate reality realigned with their’s that would be great. Also if anyone remembered where he cast the bad that fight so I didn’t stand in it, that would be great too. Hey sometimes temporal anomalies (or lag) can have their advantages XD
Finishing everything a few seconds after everyone else is normal for me, I’ve had mates enter another Arena before I have entered the previous one… I don’t have lag issues, I’ve got some form of ISP induced parental control.
Normally when I log on I have normal latency (which here is a base of 240-340), which then escalates over the next 15-60 minutes to silly numbers (4,000-10,000 are normal). It usually resets when I DC.
Unfortunately, sometimes it just happens. I had a night of good latency until I entered an instance on Squidly, as the healer. The 1st I realised I had real latency issues was when I got the tanks “WTF!” in chat, to realise they had already wiped on the 1st trash pack, even though my screen showed them all standing with me at the entrance.
Sometimes it works in my favor… not very often though.
Oh god, I still remember all these horrible lag things.
I am proud to say that I now have a mighty desktop the size of my desk, and hard wired internet that only ever exceeds 100ms when I’m torrenting.
Best memory I have is from ICC, where everything on my screen was as if I had disconnected (everyone running in place, no abilities firing) but I was, apparently still connected. I could run around, use abilities, and everyone in the raid confirmed it.
Only, I had no idea where I was or what was happening. So, I had my DK friend shout directions to me, like “GO LEFT! YOU ARE STANDING IN BAD! GO RIGHT!”
I did an entire kill of Festergut that way. It was actually kinda fun.
On another note, I think I must be the only tank in the world that finds Ozruk simple. It’s very simple, there are plenty of bosses that are ludicrously more complicated.
Ozruk is literally a case of:
Ability #1: run through boss, return to start position.
Ability #2: run away from boss, return to start position.
Repeat until DPS kills the thing.
Also: nobtwaddle. rofl.
After a shite day + night at work, the last thing I saw before heading to bed was your comment… brought the 1st smile to my face for the day. So thatnks for dropping by Rip!
I had a couple of ICC fights like that, the one after the lootship (ohh how quickly we forget). I was listening to vent, playing with the “natural rhythms” of my casting and targeting raid mates to kill the adds. Long after the fight was after, my PC caught up and I got the whole fight in fast forward. I was dead, but I had still done alright.
There have also been several arenas where I have been a blind man guided by my guide dog mates. Sheep, interrupts, blinks the lot… some how we win some of them… I can only hope that the opposition is suffering from my lag as much as I am.
Don’t ask me where nobtwaddle came from… maybe it was my inner-nobtwaddle aching to get out.
I feel for you.
With the Cataclysm content being the way it is lag can be harder then anything Blizzard will ever design. Lag can turn simple fights into hell for a player.
I’ve a few guild members that have this issue and if I queue up with them and we get BRC we just drop and wait to requeue. It is not even worth trying that encounter with people that might lag.
On a humorous note:
Ozzy is the source of the biggest joke in my guild. We have a Paladin tank that just can not escape it. It does not matter what he does, he always dies.
He even got into the habit of running early. He is usually behind me by the time it hits and as a hunter, I am at max range, 40 yards.
He just dies, from what we do not know. He is behind me and I am fine. Every time. For some reason it is bugged for him. It always kills him, even if he is on the other side of the instance when it hits. It is a riot.
Blizzard said they have never heard of this issue but I assure you, it happens to him every time. We laugh as he screams in pain should we get that as a random.
We usually just end up skipping him.
You see, that’s what I mean.
What is one person’s (Rip’s) loot pinata, is anothers (your Pally mate’s) nightmare.
It’s the advantage of guild groups (which Blizzard has made this expansion all about, but then seems to be making it preferable to pug for some reason).
Guildies will 4 man an instance with the 5th on permanent follow due to lag/dc.. but a PuG.. they wont buff or provide food/lockrocks.. but boy will they bitch and moan if you are only on 9,999 dps.
Fortunately for me, even though I live on the East Coast of the States and play through a server on the West, I rarely ever have server lag issues. The times I have had them (when everybody was wasting time in Dalalag), I found it to be extremely annoying – I can only imagine the difficulties you Aussies feel.
The most annoying heroic boss for me is Ozruk. Since hunters cannot get the DoT to break out of Paralyze, it is virtually guaranteed that I will die – Save the mana, let the Huntard die. Now, I understand that there are certain ways around the Paralyze – running in to melee swing to get the DoT and disengaging back out before Shatter occurs – but still just flat out hate the fight because I know what the most likely result for my toon is going to be – death. But, hey, figures – the only way to kill a hunter is to specifically design the encounter against them. Nice Fail Ghostcrawler – he must play a mage
good.
Hunters must die… Lock’s 1st of course, but in the absence of a Lock, a Hunter will do fine.
As I mentioned in the post, the thing about this fight is you expect, nay plan, to have at least one death. it’s one of those fights you blow all your cooldowns before the tank gets aggro, because a bit of dps ping-pong is better than the certain untimely death that is coming.
Although I am always a bit shocked and surprised when rather than being at the top of the meter, I am dead 30 seconds in. doesn’t help when the tank drags the boss to the ranged by mistake (repeatedly), or I hit blink rather than iceblock and find myself at the bosses feet… not that I would ever do that… kk?
How do you die on Ozruk as a Hunter?
The Paralyze isn’t permanent and (unless the tank really hates you or is totally clueless) Ozruk doesn’t do anything that damages the non-DoT DPSers. Twang twang twang (or bang bang bang) — pause for paralyze to wear off and Twang again. Rinse, repeat, loot.
Now melee DPS I can see viewing this fight as a death sentence, but I’m confused about the Hunter thing…
On Corla, there is always THAT GUY who is assigned a beam to interrupt, doesn’t say anything when you ask if he’s done it before, interrupts your quick explanation with “gogo!”, let’s his evolve and wipes the group. Then leaves group. AAAARGH!
I might as well be “THAT” guy… I know the fight, but I might as well log off and save the party the extra pain.
But I only leave a group when I know I am detrimental to it’s success… which means I get to complete one heroic per week
My main is a prot paly, so I’ve never seen the dps view of Corla till I started leveling my kitty Druid… Felt like such a noob trying to explain that I couldn’t kill my target…
Only one wipe and a nice explanation of my noobness and we downed her.
That is a good result for Corla, I’m lucky if I get away with 3 wipes and I know what I am doing.
Still, I guess one of the things that bugs me is the fight is recoverable with one, even two enraged twilight heralds… but most pugs seem to wait for the 1st to pop, then put down their weapons and refuse to play.
For me, it’s only when a fight goes bad that it becomes interesting… who doesn’t love the tank & healer finishing off a fight… or just the tank… or just the lonely mage and his mirror images running like hell trying to take that last couple of percent health.
I know the definition of skill is boss down, no damage taken, everyone over 14k dps… but for me, the real definition of skill is wiping the shit off the fan and throwing it back in the boss’ face.
<3 to our evolutionary cousins and their appropriate tool use (Hell I want to scoop up some shit and throw it at most zoo visitors, public transport users, ISP customer service staff and the odd Blizzard developer… ohh did I forget the pugs… yeah, the pugs too)
