I LOVE IT!
Yes I’ve had it for a long time, but pre-glyphs it was “expensive”
Only a light feather
I hear you exclaim.
ONLY A LIGHT FEATHER!
- and the grinding!
- or the silvers at the AH!
- and the bag space!
- and the repair bill when you forget you ran out yesterday and haven’t restocked!
- and the bigger repair bill 10 minutes later when you forget again!
So although I may have gotten it years ago, even though I even had a special dismount/slowfall macro, even though for the cost of a glyph I have been able to throw them around like 1 copper candies…
I haven’t used it.
It was a forgotten skill, one with more risk than reward.
Now, now, I cast it all the time. I have to stop every 29 seconds for fear I will be without it.
OK, alright, I admit that might be a slight exaggeration… I can wait 35 seconds, maybe.
I use it in Stormwind.
Do you use it in Stormwind?
Why not?
I port into Stormwind (at will of course, I’m a Mage!), I blink out the door, pop slowfall, mount up and JUUUUMMMPPP!
Well, it’s more like a leap, a calculated slow leap. I have to get it just right.
Too far to the left and I am hanging on a windowsill.
Too far to the right and I and galloping mindlessly into a 3 story building.
Just right and I am 1/2 way down the path into Stormwind proper, chuckling quietly at the Oooopppfff sound of everyone behind me hitting the ground.
Eye of the Storm
Prance down one step, turn, prance down another step, onto the ground and away… Naaah too slow!
Launch myself of the rock, hurtle through space, hurtle myself for 1/3 of my health when I hit the ground.
Slow Fall, mount, float.
Float to the flag
Float to BeT
Float to DR
Float over everyone’s heads…
Unless of course you have the Apocalypse Now soundtrack in your head while waiting for the BG to commence… Then you pop Slowfall on everyone and hum manically to yourself.
Note… it only lasts 30 seconds, so if you are the only one casting slow fall, expect to watch your teammates lauch gracefully out over the field of battle then…. drop like a stone, one by one, in a long line of WTF?’s
Expect it… enjoy it
Arathi Basin
Float like a butterfly, sting that Blacksmith like a friggin Fireball slinging Mage with a bone to pick – your bones!
Some people are aware when they gain slowfall… They just launch themselves straight off the cliff.
I use it to get from Lumbermill to Blacksmith (who doesn’t?), from Balcksmith to Goldmine (as I run along the road above goldmine I always have a quick peak. If I need to, any excuse will do, I slowfall and drop in on the Horde).
There could be 15 of them waiting for me… I don’t care… I get to slowfall!
Scumbag Elemental shaman on the opposition, one that likes to thunderstorm you off the cliff?
Smile and wave as you gently float to the ground… Poor shaman was sure they had a kill there. Ohh here’s a living bomb as a farewell present… Open it in 10 seconds!
Wintergrasp
Launch yourself from the towers and drop in on the Horde midfield.
I can’t even bear the pain of running down that hill from the graveyard.. so I slowfall…
Down to where the workshop is…
Onto the closest roof so I can slowfall into the main courtyard…
Or… Onto the towers where the griefing Boomkin hid before the battle began just to snipe us.
Bye Bye Boomkin… Mage incoming!
Strand of the Ancients
Float into the heart of battle, from wall to wall.
Isle of conquest
Screw the port into the waiting arms of the Horde… Gloat (lol I meant float, but the spellchecker gets one point for this) over their heads!
Don’t run down around and up to the Hanger… Float to the top of the path!
Questing
I love slowfall for questing. I love it. I love it. I like it a lot!
In the old world no fly zones, the most frustrating part of questing is the travel.
You look at the map… The objective is only an inch away… On the other side of that mountain range.
That pile of virtual rock just added 15 minutes to your quest.
Stupid rock!
Never fear, slowfall is here!
Just race to the top of the mountain, pop slowfall, line up the quest objective and float on in.
What, that guy sent you straight back again?
30 minutes for 2 quests or 5 minutes thanks to slowfall.
It is seriously the best thing since… Spellsteal, but that’s another story…

Silly noam! Always late to the party.
I have short legs… I try to keep up, but you long legged ones just race ahead
I’m not so much a slow fall guy as I am a “blink at the very last moment before you hit the ground” kind of guy. Now THAT’S living on the edge
I already live on the edge.. of the world…
My latency says “You are approaching a ledge, you better blink now, because the server thinks you just hit the ground”
i LOVE slowfall (and blink, but i’ll stay on topic)! i have it hotkeyed, so i always perform a graceful run/jump/slowfall cast as i leave the mage tower, floating gently down to the alchemist’s shop to restock reagents.
in instances like Old Kingdom or Gun’Drak, where everyone jumps into the watery places below, i always slow fall. everyone says that i’m too glamorous to just fall like normal raiders (lol) i’m a mage, dammit — i have a reputation to live up to! MAGES SHOULDN’T PLUMMET!
oh — i should also mention that nothing is as hilarious to me as floating gently down somewhere riding my lighter-than-air mammoth. jumping off the overlook going down to the SW harbor? tons of smiles from me there. jumping into that clearing outside of IF for brewfest? same thing. and sometimes i jump from the mage tower in SW mounted up, too. you’re not the only one, Gnomeageddon!
The one & only time I’ve been to Eye of the Storm, a mage did that to me. I laughed hysterically until I realized I couldn’t land and floated into a large group of Horde.
<_<
I wish there were a trinket or something (even with a looong cooldown like the Argent Tourney tabard) that would let "mere mortals" get slow fall.
In Org I can slow fall from the ledge of one of the buildings by the portal trainer on to the bank. Good fun.
I always end up calling it feather fall – my old school D&D roots are showing.
you and me both…
I had to correct myself so many times writing this post.. it is feather fall to me too…
I dare say if I was to could both featherfall & slowfall entries in last 600 odd posts, slow fall would barely rate a mention…
PS.. I caught something on “camera” just for you.. yes, premeditated, for you… are you scared yet?
…
Terrified.
/me runs and hides.
/me peeks around corner.
You think I’m going to give it up that quickly & easily?
You have to earn it…
Dance!
actually, i always call it feather fall, too — old D&D roots FTW. it doesn’t help that the spell component is a feather.
Slow Fall: Making Sprink Sing “Bat Sprink” While Falling Long Distances Since… about a year ago, actually. ^_^
lol…
Ok it took me two reads, but they my lol was clearly across the neighborhood.
I did AB with 9 mates last night…
Ok, I don’t have 9 mates, but ummm anyway…
They were literally queuing up at LM to slow fall to BS…
I had as much fun as them, because 2-3 of them didn’t mount 1st.
The tears of laughter were rolling down everyone’s faces.
Slow fall is fun… but it’s just like a poor man’s Levitate
Just like dispell magic is a poor man’s spellsteal
I have always been a fan of Slow Fall, even back when it required feathers.
Before there was a flight path in Un’goro Crater, I used to leap off the mountains in Tanaris and float into the crater. If you aimed correctly, you could just land on a nice tall outcrop, otherwise you’d need to rebuff before you plummeted, since it was so far.
Another popular place to Slow Fall off is the giant tree Teldrassil, although frankly, there’s nothing particularly interesting at the bottom.
Back when I was level 40, I climbed the mountains to the north between Elwynn and Redridge. I could see into the Burning Steppes, but no creatures were visible, so I leapt and hit Slow Fall. Some drake fireballed me before I hit the ground. At that point it was run, rez, port.
When Silithus first opened, I climbed the mountains to the north, looking for a way into Feralas. I found a giant trench. Since I had the abilities for exploration, I Slow Fell in and verified that it was indeed an unadorned repeating pattern trench with vertical sides, so I had to port out, back to Darnassus because the Theramore portal wasn’t available yet.
Nowadays, I find myself Slow Falling out of Dalaran for carrots occasionally, and I no longer have to farm feathers.
Sounds like a circus act…
“Will slowfall for carrots… Pst”
I am exactly the same with levitate. I am a perpetually levitating priest. I levitate just because I can. Especially when I’m fishing. I love levitate-fishing
So yes, I salute this post!
Glyph of Slowfall rocks! The only thing that could improve it would be if we had a few more minor glyphs to go with it…
Glyph of Eternal Slowfall (Minor Glyph): Your Slowfall spell duration is now increased by 59 minutes 30 seconds.
Glyph of Infinite Possibilities (Minor Glyph): Your Slowfall spell now enables Mage Flight Form, allowing you to float in any direction at up to 225% speed. While in Mage Flight Form, your Blink spell allows you to teleport through walls.
Ok, maybe I got a little carried away. But breaking the laws of time and space is very Magey!
