- Some go straight (usually the tanks).
- Some go right
- I always go left.
It’s an old habit. Whenever I enter a room, both in RL and in game, I head left. As long a my right arm is free to swing a punch, or a sword I am happy.
I’m in the right place – Left.
Of course there is a downside to this. If there is a pat on the left, or the tank leans to the right and clears that side 1st I can get a nasty shock when a mob taps me on the shoulder to ask me why I am there.
Bad BG Human AI.
I dare say it makes me predictable in PvP too.
You may think mobs have pathing issues and are so predictable that they become insignificant.
What about the low health doesn’t-want-to-be-Suicide-Mage that enters combat from the same path every time.
I know there are some Horde players that just sit there waiting, their crosshairs trained at the spot that I will predictably appear.
I like to think I play like an Over of Cricket. 5 consistent, predictable bowls, followed by a yorker, a bouncer and a googly all in one.
If only I remembered to play that last fireball differently to the 1st 5.
That’s my puddle of bad – keep out!
My exit route from puddles of bad is pretty much the same every time. I don’t bother strafing, I run forward. I want to get up close and personal with the mongrel that just singed my behind.
You need to play to my strengths.
If you are a raid leader, don’t ask me to DPS the mob on the right, or heal the tank on the right – I will probably be out of range.
Tanks, pull left if you want heals, right if you want my ranged DPS.
Raid members. When the shit hits the fan, run to the left side of the room if you want heals. If you don’t want to and there is a Mr. Right on the otherside, go right.
Give me the left every time and I will be your Gnome, or Squid.
What about you, do you hang to the left or the right?
Are you so habitual that you:
- Taunt when in PvP
- Wait for the last 35% of mob health before you unleash your IWIN! button only to remember it’s a Heroic boss, not a raid boss and it is dead before your global cooldown allows you to cast your finishing moves?
- Reach for the blink on your Pally, the Earth Shield on your Mage.
- Do you pull up your totems after every fight, even though you aren’t playing a Shaman?
- Wait for the BG Spirit Rez even though you are in a raid instance?
- Wait for the healer rez even though you are in a BG?
- Can you fold your arms across your chest both ways?
- Do you always start walking with the same foot?
Go on, come clean. What’s your nasty little secret?
Gnomer and Out!

Even groups to the right, odd groups to the left!
We’ve a rule for pen and paper games on how to clear every room in the dungeon – “follow the left hand wall”. Almost every map will allow you to do this and get to all the areas eventually.
I still do it in games too, it just makes it so much easier to play, and also find your way back.
I’m not consistent, but in D&D, and in single player RPGs, I will tend to go either all left or all right.
Whimsy.
My biggest thing is that I don’t HAVE an oh shit button.
50 odd kills of ony in classic. Allways in Group 1(front left) in tank group to supply auras, another 20 odd kills of Gruul where again the same applied probably did’nt help either.
Guess what if I zone into any single boss room, I am heading for the left no matter what.
I jump up and down when I’m trying to run out of bad stuff on the ground, so that today my husband yelled “FAT BOOMKIN JUMPING!” when we were fighting Putricide and I was trying to get out of the malleable goo. I don’t know why, maybe it’s Mario syndrome, it makes me FEEL like I’m going to have more of a chance to get out of it on time.
I also try to blink when I am a druid, but I’ve keybound my cat/dash macro to the same key so that’s usually not disastrous so much as it is, “Oh, I am a cat now.”
My main is a tree with an 80 mage alt and I have tried to blink on the tree, or shift into a form on my mage, more times than I care to think of. It got so bad I had to rebind several keys so there would be no overlap between the two characters :-p
This is a rough one. For the most part I’m pretty good at being fluid, moving where I feel is best, I will usually tend to stick left, but mostly because I’ve always been a fan of ‘spread out’ and most players -seem- to go right.
As for getting characters confused, with 7 80′s now, 5 different classes, I’m pretty good at not mixing them up, though it does happen occasionally. Take for example last week:
Well last wek I was having a really bad day, a fever of 104, and all around terrible mood, so I tanked pugs on my bear, my bear is such a beautiful way to release frustrations, I then hopped onto my priest for a quick random for frost badgers before going back to bear. Well, I logged in, queued, waited 18 years while looking up some druid stuff, queue thing pops up, and I’m in autopilot, I charge in and swipe. my giant AGGRO thing in the middle disappears I run to the next group and swipe, almost immediately gianta ggro thing goes away, I run to the next group and swipe thinking ‘wow this is crazy dps’ finally teh tank goes ‘if you pull one more time I am waiting till I can kick you’ I stop……and realize I’m on my priest and the tank has just been pulling the aggro -off- me and he’s now sitting back there with 3 groups. I apologize profusely and behave the rest of the run.
I hang left, but I don’t believe we’re talking about the same thing….Seriously, I don’t believe I RUN/WALK left or right habitually. I can confirm that I jump when running out of bad stuff ala puggingpally.
