I know you don’t have much time to reply to emails, so I thought I’d sucker… errr fool you into leaving a post length comment like I did with Typhoon Andrew the other day.
TELL ME ABOUT FIRE PVP!
I’m a Fire Mage, I think it’s in my blood.
From the moment I got my 1st fireball and accidentally oneshot the 1st quest giver I knew.
It felt so good I rushed on and levelled my Fire Mage from 1 to 80 in 4 years.
I discovered some time back you are a closet Fire Mage, deceived into the wayward paths of Frost and Arcane.
Now I read you have cast off the Frosty and Arcane specs to return to Fire. 3.3 was good to us. I was so looking forward to the 3.3 changes that I dumped my dubious raid Arcane 2nd spec and bought me a Fire PvP spec and it was still only 3.2!
As I hadn’t really entered battlegrounds since the TBC Honor frenzy, I also had to craft up some of that blue PvP gear.
I couldn’t wait to get to Wintergrasp and…. die, die, die.
I have lots of talents but not much skill, so I was thinking of adopting the PvE strategy of overcompensating for incompetence through overgearing.
As I write this I have close to 75k honor and 75 odd marks of Wintergrasp, the question is what to do with them?
I think gear progression for PvP is somewhat simpler than PvE. There are a lot less options, especally for the non-Arena player.
So tell me:
- What should I get?
- How should I spec?
- Should I get up close and personal, or should I stand back and Flame Strike spam?
I’m turning to you because I know you are the master of the Experimental Arcane Arts.
My only other option would be to turn to the recunt hugger, but she’s a Warlock-come-Paladincome-Rogue with issues about my snowdropping, panty pinching ways.
Please Sir, can I have some moar… FIRE!

There is a rule, No Fire for you, 10 years.
I am all FIRE!
I cough… Dragon’s Breath…
I fart… Blastwave…
I could go futher, but there has been enough discussion about WoWSTDs in the blogsphere… Probably enough to say it starts with a minor itch, then explodes so all your close friends hate you…
PvP’ing as fire is friggin’ awesome. Yes I know you die and are rezzing a lot . . . sometimes . . . alright a lot of the time . . .but
IT’S
SO
FUN!!!
I’ve found that in the right circumstances (namely which class I’m going to eff with) up close and personal can rock somebody’s world (yeah, rock them straight to the Spirit Healer lols) but other times it just results in a fire mage face stomp (which results in ME going straight to the Spirit Healer).
Amazingly enough in WG, quite often I’ve been able to stand back and take people out from a distance. Nothing more fun than lighting 5 or 6 horde up with Living Bomb and watch them explode each other to death. Or when they land on the top of the columns thinking they can kill us at range then I land, light them up with a few casts and then blastwave them off the platform to their deaths. . . mwuah ha ha ha ha ha
I’m experimenting with a 0/59/12 build right now (basically deep fire with improved chill and icy veins). I like this one now b/c since I don’t have a full PvP gear set, the talent points in frost still allow me to take advantage of all the crit I have through my PvE gear (which is built for a FFB spec – yes I know, I don’t raid arcane. I may switch back to TtW at some point, but I still like playing a FFB build, less dps or not. . . ).
It’s still a work in progress. I definitely share your sentiments and would love to hear from Euripedes on the topic!
Sounds like I am running just like you… and it is AWESOME!
I have to do my PvE content 1st, or I continue on with my suicidal strategies without the tools… Usually results in a swift votekick!
hear hear!
i love wintergrasp so much as a fire mage, i’m getting a reputation in my guild as “the wintergrasp guy.” i try to make at least one, maybe two, every time i’m on. i’ve been using scorch, blast wave, and dragon’s breath a lot, but over the weekend i started learning to use living bomb correctly in a PvP situation, and ZOMFG, is it a kick in the pants. (i just passed 100,000 honorable kills this past weekend, too. coincidence??)
i still lean heavily on blizzard as my AoE to ferret out hordies hiding in destroyed vehicles, but it’s my fire spells that keep me coming back. BURN, baby, BURN! WHOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!
I see your 100k and lower it by 80k….
Man that’s awesome 0-100k HK in one year!
Fire PvP is amazing. You have, roughly, six seconds to live, but in those six seconds you are a GOD. A absolute fiery GOD.
Yep. I like to think of myself as an intercontinental ballistic missile….
Roar in, explode!
I’m gonna have to second this request. My recent return to PvP has been a frosty clusterhump. I want to spec Fire. I really do. But my approach with the old standby Frost has been inconsistent at best. When I’m fortunate enough to track down the Warrior in quest greens and blues, I feel like some kind of Battlegrounds Messiah. But when I encounter the hardcore pee-vee-peeps, sometimes the only thing I get to click is Release to Graveyard. Let’s see it, Euripedes!
The Arcane Shatter Spec 4thwin!
Get your filthy Arcane/Frost thoughts out of the blog…
YOU WILL BE PURGED WITH FIRE!
Whoa Ragnaros flashback!
Ha yeah…
I had one of those “damn, I’m fire’ moments the other day.
I saw the call go out for Onyxia DPS.
Gnome’s done old school Ony, but Onyxia Revisited.
Then I realised I was fire and would get /raidkicked for shite DPS.
No living bomb, or scorch or even frostFIRE.
There was a time when it was worth respecing for Ony. Now for a 5 minute kill…
I think not
Ohhh I know that was off topic, nothing to do with Rag, but it prompted the memory
Thats alright I’m old school too, and appreciate the plight of the fire mage.
[...] I had forgotten how much I love to spend my time at the Spirit Healer. It’s not so much the time at the spirit healer as the 30 seconds in between (25 seconds to ride to the battle, 5 seconds to unload and die.) (Mmm what about Mr. I don’t know about PvP, but I’ll give it a go.. nearly 100,000 HKs!) [...]
