Wot for?
Maybe I’m a bit old fashioned, but when an item drops that is an upgrade, a big upgrade, that is immediately wearable, it’s not greed, it’s NEED.
Maybe I have been spoilt over the last 4.5 years grouping with a bunch of long term friends, or worst case with guild mates.
Maybe the game has changed from NEED, GREED and PASS. I know this is true. I have never greeded so many BoPs as I have in the last few months with Squidly.
The Story
You see the story goes that while running an instance the other day a BoE blue dropped. One that was obviously an upgrade over my crappy green.
I asked if I could NEED (I always ask even if it’s explicitly stated, there maybe someone that will cry if the get beaten and I am not going to lose that much sleep over the blue or purple pixels).
The response was…
Nothing…
The roll timer was counting down…
Finally one of the group members says:
Wot for?
lol. Just greed mate!
It’s funny, cause I always thought greed meant “I am a greedy bastard with no use for the item apart from filling my coffers“.
I Greeded
I greeded…
I won…
I equipped my upgrade…
But I was left wondering what the new loot rules of the game were.
Mr OffSpec
I asked my mates and a couple of them responded with:
Yeah, that sucks.
Everyone but Mr. Offspec who responded…
I always greed on everything
Funnily enough, not my memory of the way he played, not even with friends.
He then started calling me the “New Mr. Offspec”.
Pffft whatever… I’ll just keep healing ToC and grab the epics instead.
Gnomer and Out, Squidly and Stout!

WoW players are, by and large, greedy self-serving dicks.
This isn’t new news at all, sadly.
i do the same as you: if i need it, i ASK if in can need. otherwise, i greed with the rest of them, or even (*GASP!*) i may PASS on it item. O.O
Need is need; just because it would AH for more than a BoP would vendor doesn’t suddenly rewrite the rules.
Kristiaan twittered me to point out a long running discussion on the EU forums:
Epic BoE Drop Etiquette in groups?
Do you need on boe bags? or gems or cloth?. What about if the needer is not quite on top of their class.
The hunter who needs that epic int/spirit neck because it has more int, The Paladin who needs a 1 handed dps weapon, the enhancement shaman who needs a fast dagger for his offhand(before flametongue), the need for 232 epic with no sockets when their 226 has sockets, the Tailor with level 1 tailoring who needs a max level pattern.
90% of the time if someone wants to need a boe I am going to say sure go ahead. I just dont think it should be a right
To expand on what Ngita said, if it’s an upgrade you can need it, regardless of what it vendors for.
However, the same etiquette applies for BoP items. Yes, that int/spirit neck might be better than what that hunter has, but if there’s a proper casting class that can use the necklace more, the hunter should pass.
Here’s the order I roll by.
1. Is it an upgrade, itemized for your main spec? Roll need.
2. Is it an upgrade with loose itemization for main spec and no one needed yet? Roll Need.
3. Is it an off-set upgrade and no one else needed yet? Roll need.
4. Is it an upgrade poorly itemized for main spec (upgrading a green with a badly itemized blue/purple) and no one needed yet? Roll need.
5. Greed.
I’ll add one to what Fricassee said.
6. you are an enchanter and want some mats for your new wrist but you dont want to buy mats? Roll need.
I have always operated on the rule that you GREED everything that is dropped unless it’s an item that you can actually use, as in an upgrade or even a side-grade, then you NEED the said item… I also always tell the group that it’s an upgrade and I will be rolling NEED, if they think it’s an upgrade for them too then they should roll against me. The only time that I will PASS on blues is if we have an DE’er in the run which we always establish before entering the dungeons.
I don’t particularly understand what the negative image to rolling on the items dropped? unless I’m misreading some of the comments here.
If it’s a raid, it should always be controlled by Master Looting anyway.
Loot master: Anyone need that?
Mr Tree: Nah
Mr Offspec: I’ll roll need for my healset?
ahh the lolz
lol. I didn’t think Mr. Offspec cared enough for other players to heal them…
