Continuing on from Tanks need Mages because…
Healers need Mages because…
I’m the 1st to admit that Mages don’t really need healers.
I’m usually the lowest on the healing recieved meter (Ok, dead Gnomes get no heals, but…)
In theory we are at the back of the room, preferably behind the healer, taking no damage.
Still, there are reasons why we like to have a pocket healer and more importantly, why they need us.
Challenge
So your tank has 30k health… I don’t, so here’s a challenge for those healers, just a small one mind you…
Can you squeeze of a quick heal before I get 2 shot and without the tank taking a dust bath?
Can you measure how little a heal we need without overhealing… Can you actually do it without overhealing?
We are the challenge of party healing. More often than not you are dropping heals on party members at full health for something to do… Don’t worry, we will relieve your boredom.
Mana conservation
I’m not talking about replenishment here, although I’m sure they love that.
What I’m talking about is that mana is (or was at one point) a finite resource. The sooner a mob or more importantly a boss goes down, the less the healer needs to worry about mana.
We make it happen sooner.
A wider view
Life is pretty boring as a healer when only the tank needs heals. Mages do sometimes get hit and usually they are out of the field of vision.
We give the healers of the game an excuse to look up from healbot, so they can see the pack of mobs charging down the Mage.
Mob attraction
Mobs love healers (as Squidly experiences often enough).
Mages generate aggro, lots of aggro.
Healers and Mages have a symbiotic relationship.
- Healers get Aggro
- Mages steal aggro
- Healers heal aggro’d Mages
Water
We got it and it’s always free for healers.
I admit I have taken it pretty much for granted.
I log on, I make water, I kill stuff, I drink. I will buff just so I can drink. Water is cheep for a Mage.
Healers on the other hand need water, but can’t make it themselves. Squdly’s run the other day had 2 mages and bucket loads of water… I was never thirsty.
I have had other runs which were sans Mages, or worse yet, included selfish Mages that wouldn’t provide water (without repeated requests).
Sure Healers don’t NEED Mages for water… But why drink Perrier when a Mage can provide tap water for nothing…

Having run with Gnomer through the odd raid. I can testify that while you may not need healers you definately need druid love. B-Res little man? Your a little lower to the ground than normal
But… but… I am saving you mana during the battle aren’t I…
Sure you need to B-Rez me, but think of all the heals you didn’t need to cast!
I will play Gnomeaggedon again when the Brez cooldown is reduced to 30 seconds

Healers use mana in PVE? I thought they got rid of that in LK along with CC and attunements.
Good Healer Need Mana,
It’s go this way
1. you stack mp5
2. you have too many mana
3. you replace mp5 for haste and spellpower, which increase your hps, be burn mana faster
3.5 You dps and tank feel comfortable to get more damage (e.g. slower respond on void zone), so there are more damage to heal. Or “Hey, let’s try one healer less, for more dps”
4. you hadn’t got enough mana
(Okay, I make it up for 3.5)
Well we do if we are DPSing as well
. Shhhhhhh!

I run with lots of 80s lately, and they won’t downrank their cookies.

A reason why some healers I play with stand near me during instances. Any loose mobs that come towards a healer, I always freeze them in place long enough for them to safely get away, and for the tank to take aggro back.
I always used to stand by my healers until another Mage blogger suggested the danger in threat transferance if I pull threat and invis/ iceblock too late
