Unless you are a mushroom, live under a rock or maybe like me have had other priorities for the last month, you will have realized that the C-word is now acceptable, well in relation to WoW at least.
NO! Not that C-word… This one…
CATACLYSM
Too many words have already been wasted on prediction and QQ for something that is still around 12 months away, so I won’t waste my breath on that (until next week maybe…).
Rather I want to suggest that now is probably a good time to reroll.
Gnutty Gnome!
What Gnomer? Are you mad?
- I need to get emblems
- I need to beat Ulduar
- I need to beat ToC
- I need to see Icecrown Citadel
- I need to finish my rep grind with Sons of Hodir.
- I need to get my Enchanting to 450
- I need to buy my Mammoth
Hell, I just hit 80 and you want me to reroll, you are one Gnutty Gnome!
While I have bigger Gnuts under my robe than many word believe possible for a 3 foot nothing Gnome, I’m not quite as mad as my Fire crazed demeanor might suggest.
The End is Nigh!
You see the end of the world is nigh. At least the end of the world of Azeroth as we know it.
It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen!
Based on previous expansion releases, there won’t be just one big bang at 12 midnight on release day. We will instead see a series of events leading up to it. Thus time may be running out…
As you may be aware I am leveling an alt. My 1st real alt when all is said and done. I am kind of power leveling him, in the sense that I am sporting some heirloom gear, not completing every quest and most importantly, with the aid of a questing mod, I am not reading quest text.
Who are the Kurzons?
This dawned on me at level 38.9 in STV while I was slaughtering Kurzons.
- Why am I slaughtering Kurzons?
- Who are the Kurzons?
Now I’m not a lore junky, it wasn’t until Northrend that I started reading quest text… On my 3rd main!
But in around a year, many of the existing quests and much of the lore may well disappear! Gone in a series of cataclysmic events that shape World of Warcraft 4.0.
Lore Master?
Are you as mad determined as Mae?
Do you want the Loremaster Achievement?
If you do, it either won’t exist, or at the very least won’t exist in it’s current form.
World Explorer?
World Explorer?
Sure The Barrens will probably be more interesting with volcanoes, but it won’t be the same place. It may be filled again, it might even become an alliance zone, but the only thing you can be sure of is that barrens chat will still be the same. (I wonder if in the new barrens there will be an inn called “The Barrens Chat” in homage to 4 odd years of bar room crap being spoken?)
Slow and Deliberate
It might seem a bit extreme to suggest that you roll an alt now when there is still 12 odd months to go, but you need to realize I am not talking level to 80 in 7 days played.
There is a good chance that if you start an alt now, consume all the content at a pace that allows you to read and absorb both the quest text and lore (and of course those weird and wonderful conversations the NPCs have between themselves) you may need 12 months. Remember you still want to raid, collect emblems etc on you main!
Anyway, some food for thought.
- Pick a faction you haven’t experienced.
- Pick a race you haven’t experienced.
- Pick a class you haven’t experienced.
- Experience WoW like you may never get the chance to do again! (Or is that Party like it’s 1999?)

“..Gnuts…” *snicker*
And, It’s okay, I know I’m mad!! Loremaster was crazy fun! What you’re suggesting, seems reasonable to me. I have a friend who claims that Cataclysm made him want to level through the old world, just as it is, one last time. Can’t say I blame him!
Right now, I’m leveling my pally alt and I’m having a blast. I’m trying to enjoy the old world stuff one last time (or maybe one before-the-last time) before they tear it apart.
I have another friend who says she’s going to quit, she’s so disgruntled with the expansion information and the idea that they’re going to tear up old world.
Me, I’m just looking forward to the new challenges. Not necessarily the new raiding content, but all the other new stuff for sure!
I think it’s great that we have such a long warning of the impending doom…
It means we can all take that direction we want, whether it’s a revisit or completion of the WoLK stuff.
Imagine the outcries if we got told a month before the expansion that the old world would never be the same!
you make a compelling case. i wish i had the time to level an alt of ANY kind! i’m gonna be stretched thin enough trying to level a new worgen when the world changes… and don’t even get me started on what CLASS he’ll be. i’m honestly thinking mage again, because i don’t think i’d like being a melee class, and what other caster options are there? (all joking aside, though, i’m considering a druid as well…)
Plenty of time to level that alt on the side.. You will have enough time to worry about Worgens next year.
I too am hoping they will introduce another caster class… I mean what are our options now… Mage, mage, Mage or mage.
While it’s the kind of multiple choice answers I like, there has to be mores… ohhh… what’s that, there are other caster classes in the game…
Druids are good.. but I have to tell you, I am having heaps of fun as a pew pew elemental shaman… the best part being that when I am sick and tired of grinding and questing as Ele, I just switch specs and I am resto for an instance…
Ohhh yeah.. hit 40 this morning!
Epic Mount and Epic Dual Spec!
Done and done! I’m sticking to the Horde though, because I just love it. I was also thinking that this IS a great time to putter around the old world a bit, get in some sight seeing, relive some good times, and just have fun.
Like Mae, I’m trying out a Paladin…. They’re not half bad these days!
lol Just as I am sticking Alliance…
I’ve had 2 Horde toons well into their 50′s, but only the one Alliance toon to 80.. so time to explore those bits I missed before…
eg: I did this long quest chain at Theramore this morning, exposing a conspiracy… it was just awesome…
I must have taken 30 odd screen shots… every NPC I interacted with had some awesome throw away line.
I remember hating Duskwallow as a Hordie, so completely ignored in on Alliance.
a good idea would be to visit all your favorite zones, take some screenshots. make a little scrapbook of them, because earth mother knows what they’ll look like when the whole mess is done.
Absolutely.. just as I did with Ol’ Dalaran before WoLK… actually now I think about it, I don’t think I have been back to the old site since…
You mind reader, you.
My alt-mad self and my alt-mad significant other just rolled hordies for this very reason. They may become the alts we finally level past 30.
Zimzikah, troll warrior and Nantao, orc shaman are absorbing everything they can from the old world before it dies in flames. New classes, new professions, PvP (*gasp*), everything.
I’m so sad about the end of the world. I am extremely attached to Ashenvale and Sen’Jin Village, and they’re both destined for incredible destruction.
lol funny thing how so many alts get to early teens or late 20s but never grow beyond that.
Great idea trying out all the flavors of the game… I keep meaning to take my Shaman into BG’s.. but only remember at the early levels of each bracket, then forget later as the big *0′s come into sight (and yes I know I could be reaping xp in there too… I just keep forgetting).
Think not about how sad the end is… think about how beautiful the new beginning will be, once the dust settles.
I’m not sure if you have ever played around 6am, but I found myself in Auberdine, Darkshore this morning as the sun rose up above the ocean…
One of those beautiful moments that the screenshot I took wont truly do justice too.
It was a new day (a new beginning)… and being Friday, I will get to watch the sun set too!
now that you mention it, i’ve NEVER seen a sunrise in azeroth. weird, i know. i’ve seen PLENTY of sunsets, and they are really gorgeous (loch modan comes to mind), but no sunrises.
I think I have seen more sunrises than sunsets… and I have also seen a lot of those “dark before the dawns” too.. it happens when you are logging off at 4-5am in the morning.
I will likely roll (yet another) alt… or at least dust off some that haven’t seen lovin’ in awhile.
I really want to get as many screenshots as possible of the old world before it changes. *nodnod*
*nod nod*
Also… maybe, just maybe… hand back some of those shards?
Naah… hang onto them, you have done a good job looking after my soul…
Well apart from the Gnome Shard Chip Cookies…
But I’m sure they were nice…
I started my gender-bending druid BOY cow before the official announcement (before I’d read the leaked stuff too) to try out the new animal-form skins really, and because druid animal forms just look so darn cute skinning their kills… now if only they would give the big cow boys a little basket to skip through the fields with while they hone their Tauren-enhanced flower-picking skills!
But I digress… it will probably take me (at least) 12 months to level him as I’ve already been side-tracked into 400 cooking and running around Dalaran for Magic Books at level 1! In my defence, while he’s skipping around trolling for that Kirin Tor Familiar, it will give my other toons time to get him the heirloom shoulders and maybe the spunky staff or something like that too.
Now, do you have somewhere you’re discussing what seems to be missing from Cataclysm? I want a Merchant Class! With a Building talent tree! For building guild houses and other dwellings… hell, for rebuilding Orgrimmar maybe (I hear it may need it)! SimCity meets WoW!
lol.. I had one of those gender bending, flower picking, ex-lover skinning cows too.
My wife found it hilarious watching my cat form druid stopping to “eat the flowers”.
That we have around 12 months is a blessing… well as long as we start now… tomorrow not only may not come, but may look like a big crater…
Jeepers Creepers… No I don’t, but I will be sure to steal… errr.. expand on your idea…
Actually I reckon it’s time to take the AH business away from the Warriors and Warlocks etc of the world (Mages should be allowed to continue of course).
Time to have a Merchant class whose talent trees are based around current primary/secondary professions and their primary/secondary profs can be fighting or casting!
PS … what’s going to happen to neutral AH’s if the gobbies lose their neutrality?
Don’t worry… those goblins are slippery little suckers… a few of them are bound to escape and set up shop…
A smart government/overlord will allow the black market to continue… even though they might want their slice of the pie.
They are more likely to let the neutral Goblins trade, and bust us as we walk out the shop door…. they are probably spies anyway…
