3.2 introduced the 2 hour window for boss loot trading.
There is no question this is a great change and there has been lots of discussion about how this reduces the accidental loot distribution issues.
There are two other advantages that I have experienced.
Missed loot.
Generally there is a 30 second window to express your interest in master looted gear in our raids.
- Item gets linked
- Rolls are called for
- Countdown begins
- Countdown ends
- Loot is distributed
The thing is the raid didn’t stop for looting.
The raid has moved on and is in heated combat.
Even if the chat channel and vent isn’t filled with battle commands, it is easy to miss the call to roll.
One of two things will happen at this point:
- Someone will win the loot that someone else wanted to roll on as well, or
- No one will roll and the item will get passed over to be disenchanted.
Previously this was the end of the story, unless of course you wanted to petition a GM, which was rarely worth the effort. If the item was already disenchanted people just accepted that it was gone.
Now there is a second chance. A chance for discussion or rerolls on the won loot and a chance to pass the items on that were destined to be sharded.
Upgrade Exchange.
A great example of this occurred the other night.
A pair of leather boots dropped in ToC. These were an upgrade for multiple people including our main healer Pally and our Moonkin Druid.
Rolls were made and the boots were won by the Pally.
The Druid was a little pissed, but we all agreed that it made sense that our main healer was improved and the Alt Druid would have to wait for another day.
Next boss down and a pair of Plate Healer boots drop.
Needless to say these went to our Pally healer.
Only a few weeks back this would have been reason to leave a guild shouting Ninja! At the login screen.
Now the Druid (Mr. Offspec) was really pissed and was ranting in party chat.
What he didn’t realize (because his sound was borked and he wasn’t on vent) was as soon as they dropped the Pally healer said he was about to trade the leather boots.
[rest of post goes missing when wordpress iphone app bugs out after phone call, just going to have to give you a 2nd rate ending]
Which he did as soon as Mr. Offspec was in range.
End result… 2 happy campers!
Sharing the love boss loot
I’m not sure about you, but there have been a heap of occasions where I have won an item which was an upgrade, only to kill another boss and have something better drop.
Worse is the DKP issue, where you have used your bids for the night and that super awesome upgrade drops later… and upgrade that no one but you wants… but there is a strict item quota.
No Problermo… throw that previously won item back into the loot pool and grab the dream tool.
Disenchant Trigger finger no more
I used to DE everything as it appeared in my bags (thanks to the Auctioneer module), it was quick easy. No thought required!
These days I have become more of a raid item bank.. I will store those unwanted items till the end of the raid (well for 2 hours at least), if you change your mind and want them, speak up as I am putting my DE skill on a 2 hour cooldown.
Gnomer and Out!
PS: It appears that Jong has been up-skirting Gnomeaggedon, and my Little Fella’s secret is out… Next time your neighbor starts their lawnmower at 8am on a Sunday morning… think of me!

more-than-one-advantage-to-tradable-boss-loot/

I was running H ToC just the other day.
These boomkin gloves drop. they were actually an upgrade for my healing set, but they were dps oriented.
3 druids in the run. boomkin doesn’t roll so the feral asks if he can offset.
I tend not to be terribly concerned about gear. Thing is that a 10% upgrade on one item delivers very little in your final performance. so i elected not to roll hoping some nice trinket might turn up in the next chest.
5 minutes after the run a whisper comes through. “you want those gloves i have better in the bank.”
That’s an awesome result… something that I have felt like doing a couple of times on Squidly, but hadn’t thought to do.
As I don’t raid anymore, I had no idea that they had made this change. I missed it completely. Then, my husband was running my alt through Dead Mines and I was taking all the loots, when I noticed the blue info on the tooltip. Honestly, I think it’s awesome!!
In my husband’s guild, he’s the guild master which makes him the loot master, too. He’s okay at it, but he tends to misloot from time to time. He really, really likes the change. No one has to petition a GM, which was happening once every week or two when he gave the loot to the wrong person. lol. He said it takes a huge amount of pressure off of the master looter.
I recently got asked to master loot… which would have been my 1st time and I refused because I didn’t want to screw up on Naxx loot… but you are right, the pressure is reduced now.
There’s nothing but happiness from this change.
and it’s a rare day that any change by Blizzard receives unanimous praise!
This is a pretty nice update. But….
I just ran voa and balance t9 dropped. i was running resto like the other druid. my primary is balance, his secondary was feral. But since neither of us was balance for the raid we both rolled. Needless to say, he won the drop and made me pay 1000g for it.
So, even though its nice, greedy people are taking advantage of it. Not exactly “nothing but happiness” like you said. But still nice.
No wonder gnomes walk funny!
The other reason is revealed in todays post…
I had a thought whilst having a shower.
How long do you think it will be before someone wins a roll on a highly competed item then whispers the other rollers for an offer?
or
Someone looses and says i’ll give you 3k for it?
I think that’s been happening for a while now anyway, but pre-roll… this will just give some more flexibility… maybe on-sell the item?
PS: Stop thinking in the shower.. it might prove dangerous!
