- If you have ever gone anywhere near the official WoW forums, you will have encountered them.
- If you have read blogs, you may have encountered them.
- If you have read just about anything on the Internet, you have most likely seen them.
Forum Trolls
They are nothing new. They existed long before WoW and they will continue to exist long after WoW CDs are gathering dust in the back of your cupboard.
Euripides was a forum Troll that evolved to provide a channel for Trolls to flock to.
But back before Euripides read his first forum, maybe before he was born, before online forums themselves were born, there was a bunch of Poms that defined the art of Forum Trolling.
If you have never spent any time catching up with Monty Python, I would suggest you have barely lived. I suggest you head down to your local video store (or use whatever method you use for sourcing videos) and grab some Monty Python.
Meanwhile here’s a few introductions for you…
Starting with the ultimate introduction to forum trolling.
Argument Clinic
All those times when you see someone write “Your Mum!”, or “No it isn’t”…
Now you can see that they all form the basis of a very valid argument… Not!
Lumberjack
If you think I am drawing a long bow between Python and WoW consider that there at least two other references to Monty Python in WoW.
One of them has been in WoW since Vanilla, and sort of suggests that as much as Cadistra thinks Canada gets no WoW love, it has, even if in a backhand way.
Terry Palin being based on two of the members of the Monty Python troop and references this song “I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK”
Black Knight
Most recently Monty Python gained a WoW guernsey with the introduction of the Argent Tournament.
Yes the Black Knight and It’s Just a Flesh Wound is not a new invention, unless you consider 40 odd years new. If you don’t know the Black Knight’s origins (or just want a laugh at the good old stuff) check this one out.
Bonus points to Monty Python for the mount… I don’t know how many times I have had a quiet chuckle at the creative use of a coconut.
There are many more Python references in WoW, but I think the most love my be is the one that exists only in my mind… the Forum Troll reference.
Anyway, next time you encounter a bit of Forum Trolling, think of Monty Python, have a quiet chuckle and post a relevant Monty Python comeback.
