I’m not the L2P kind of Gnome.
Neither am I the “here’s 10g see me in the morning” kind of Gnome.
I’m the “let me teach you tadpole” kind of Gnome… Generally…
Background
I rolled a Gnome Dwarf Night Elf Human Draenei Shaman. I was inspired by Larisa‘s baby Druid and Ydraisa’s comment about leveling in innocence.
Ultimately I want a healer, but don’t want another Pally, Druid or Priest. So I rolled a Shaman. I tried every Alliance race combination, knowing full well there was no choice in the matter. I tried them twice, three times, then accepted my only “option” was Draenei.
Just for the record, I don’t like the Draenei, particularly male Draenei. It’s not the same feelings of unease I feel then following a human male about, but still I have to zoom right out so I can only see a spec on my screen.
Welcome to my group
I had barely made it paste the intro movie and zoned in when I received a group invite. Against my usually better judgment, I accepted. No real harm in a level 1 toon having company, and it should make the kill 10 rats quests go a bit quicker.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that this guy had no idea… I mean none… Ziltch! To be fair, he did give me an Int buff about 5 minutes after we grouped.
I grabbed my kill 10 rats quests and started killing… While he watched. I was a little disturbed, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t do it myself.
Then he started to laugh at me, cause he could two-shot the level 1 mobs, whereas it would take me 3-4 lightning bolts… and I was meleeing, because I thought it might help if I could hit things.
WTB Mage Skills
He did demonstrate his awesome Magely Fire power, once or twice.
He offered me 50 silver, which is pretty generous, except I have a hotline to a wealthy Gnome, so I politely declined. However I did ask politely for some food and water (not that I needed it).
A few minutes later he responds:
Oh yeah, I can do that. Wait!
At this point I will note that all my chat has been occurring in /p. All his has been in /s. He is also constantly asking me to wait… Not sure why, but I have a suspicion.
Anyway, I run off to hand in my quests with him trotting alone behind. I mention how much I miss Blink on the shaman. His response:
Who is Blink? A mate of yours?
Mmm what’s that noise in the back of my head… Alarm bells!
I ask him if he is new to WoW, but he assures me he isn’t, mentions something about Burning Crusade. I begin to suspect he thinks he isn’t new because he bought both Vanilla and TBC at the same time.
How can you know nothing, at all, about other classes? I can understand not understanding the arcane inner workings of a class, but that Mages have blink…
How can you NOT know that Mages can make FOOD AND WATER?!?
Then it happens…
The duel flag… Yep, I am barely level 2, haven’t even trained yet and I have been challenged to a duel.
It’s at this point that I check his toon out in more detail than identifying he is a Mage. Mmmm I’m level 2, he’s level 6…
I decline… He asks, why? I point out the level difference… He says he will let me win. I ask why I would bother when I have more important things to do. He says there’s an achievement.
I thank him for his company (not for the food or water, I never got that) and drop group.
Can you guess what happens then?
Yep he chases me around asking Why? Throwing up duel flags and of course tagging my mobs.
I finally got away from him and continued questing.
He caught up with me when I was doing my Totem quest. The one where you have to kill 4 rumblers. 4 of the 5 rumblers that spawn. 4 of the 3 rumblers left for me to kill because he ran off ahead of me and started slaughtering them.
I don’t think I am the 1st shaman he has chased around doing this to…
Then while the rumblers start to respawn I get a series of duel invites.
Seriously, I started our “relationship” wanting to help the guy. It ended with me wanting to push him out of a boat with a concrete block tied to his ankles. For the record, I’m not talking about his toon… I’m talking about him, the player.
I should have dueled him. I should have dueled him at level 2, then T-bagged him. I should have reported him… I guess the moral of this story is I need to:
Learn2Report
PS: Anyone point me at a good Shaman leveling guide… talents, skill use etc…?
PPS: I finally discovered how to get through all the podcasts I want to listen to. X2 speed. Sound is basically the same, but I can now listen to 2 podcasts a day.

What a huge scrub. I take comfort in knowing that people who go out of their way to be a scurb and fail at basic people skill will fail in real life. He’ll probably get never laid either.
I wonder if he ever makes it past level 6… actually I wonder if he ever trained…
I’ve had similar things happen to me. Whenever I start a new alt I can pretty much guaranetee that when I emerge from the starter area (and occasionally while in it) someone probably twice my level will spam duel invites.
I think it’s an inferiority complex thing, that they can prove their l33tness by beating up someone who has little chance against them (and you can bet that if you do beat them, as one of my toons did against someone 2 levels higher, they spam profanity and accuse of you cheating).
It’s not just a new player thing – Andro’s had “beat head against the desk” moments with level 50+ characters who ask for help and then show no knowledge of their class or the area they’re in.
“Oh, you’re 80 can you just kill these for me?”. “No.” “You suck.”
“Buost meh dedmynes?”. “Sorry, not now – I’m in Naxx.” “Selfish nub!”
And so on.
Profanity filer must have been on (odd for me) cause he was calling me all sort of names but either:
a) profanity filter was one
b) he didn’t actually know any swear words, or
c) He was too sweet to us them… obviously not been on the net long enough…
People like that really grind my gears! You’ll come across that same person Pugging Naxx 25 in Blue Quest gear and pulling 1100 DPS later on…
It’s funny you should ask about Shaman, them being my old hunting-ground (Was an enhancement Shaman for about 3 years). The funny thing is, I can’t really give you advice … Because it has been so so long since I levelled mine.
Enhancement used to be the defacto levelling spec due to the easy-mana-going nature of the Melee DPS role. I hear that Elemental does pretty well now but I will assume that unless you’re geared entirely in cloth that you won’t be finding caster leather (and subsequently Mail) very often
I’ve got a Mage, early 20s with 4 Heirlooms (Shoulder, Staff, 2 trinkets). I want to level him full Arcane since I’ve had Frost mages before and I’m a little tired of it.
Any advice for me?
He’ll probably still be level 6 looking for boost through Naxx…
I’m swinging Ele/Resto… spent too long at the back of the room…
My advice for your Mage is roll Fire
Critical QQ was working on an Arcane leveling guide.. Fikkle over at 4theHorde was going to do a series of posts on it.. but I think it stalled…
There are a few that will recommend Arcane.. check back, they will rear their heads
I had fun leveling as arcane. once I got pom and pyroblast (which I took as soon as possible) it got a lot easier.
But you’re missing the whole point in the commentary! Shouldn’t you try to stay away from the talent, spell and gear guides for once? Trying to see the game from the fresh newbie perspective, rather than trying to master everything at once?
Dear blog readers! Don’t pay any attention to his request for help! It’s just a bad habit. This character is supposed to stay innocent, OK! Don’t listen to the gnome.
did I leave that in there
Damn, my “Mum’s” checking up on my cheating ways…
Don’t worry Larisa.. no one ever listens to the little Gnome
“I guess the moral of this story is I need to:
Learn2Report”
Nope, you should have just put him on /ignore.
No more spamming trade windows/duel windows/aimless chatter etc.
He acted like a child, so that’s what he probably was. No point getting hot and bothered over a 9 year old.
I’m currently levelling an Orc Shaman on a very casual basis, currently level 24.
He’s a lot of fun to play, despite me deliberately choosing an Enhancement/Healer spec (all the guides say roll pure Enhancement or Elemental to level, and if you must go hybrid, go Elemental/Healing, NOT Enhancement/Healing). /shrug.
Already I’m a bit overwhelmed by totem spells, and I’ve only got 2 totems so far. Still, nothing better than pulling with Lightning Bolt, and then hitting things with a very large axe!
Yeah probably should have ignored… but it wasn’t just the chat and the duels, it was the mob tagging as well… and he was doing the same to other folks…
maybe I should have sent him a pst telling him I would report him if he didn’t stop hassling others…
Or maybe just given him a wedgie or two and sent hi on his way.
I’m planning on Ele/Resto… I like to shoot bolts and melee has never really done it for me… Currently I have slow staff, and I find myself dropping off to sleep between swings… people bag mages out for being the masters of one button, but at the moment I am right clicking and waiting till the mob dies…
I too am finding the extra bits a little overwhelming.. I dare say once I go to the trouble to macro a few things up it will all fall into place.. and currently skills are all over the place.
But yeah, it is nice to launch a few fireball subsitutes and them take a few hits while dealing out some meaningful 20 point ones myself (I don’t think Gnomeaggedon can manage much more at 80)
people like that really make me hate the “MM” part of “MMORPG”. then i remember that i know so many very cool, helpful, nice people in the game, and i feel better.
this guy makes me want to level up a hordie, just so i have another toon i can log back in on it and gank him. >: )
In the whole scheme of things, it was just a minor annoyance.. just as was the guy looking for a boost the other night.. I must keep things in perspective as it’s a rare occurrence.
Still … Have blog.. will post!
Yesterday I got in a very, ‘vulgar’ argument with some noob in Elwynn while I was farming copper ore. (I had just started lvling up mining.) He was complaining that all the lvl 80s were camping all the copper ore, even though I was the only lvl 80 in the zone at the time, and I repeatedly told him that there were 4 zones he could get to easily as a lvl 15 that were full of copper, all of them with like 100+spawn points for it.
/sigh
Of course when you don’t have the routes works out it would feel like a kid getting their candy taken by an adult…
Of course, if the candy is worth it…
y’know what would solve your issues with draenei? roll a female
/waggle
I nearly did… but I feel uncomfortable cross dressing, even in an anonymous online game.. and if my wife saw me starting at another chicks but for 6 hours every Friday night, well I would have lost one of my arguments for staying home and playing WoW on a Friday night rather than going to the pub with the boys…
Even white boys gotta shout, “Draenai female got the butt!”
Anywho thats why I’m rolled a new Pally, but it doesn’t hurt to look for advice on specs, and such. I still do that on my mage. Always looking for new ways to do things.
Same thing happened to me, a Warlock 2 levels my senior, I was level 5, he was 7. Wanted to duel me, I mopped the floor with him. Thats when I started loving the Paladin class.
I dare say I would be OK if I read the tool tips…
But yeah, it will be a journey of exploration.. I will read enough so that when I forget 95% of it, I will still know which are the Resto and Elemental trees…
Pallies are moire fun than shaman for the 1st 10 levels I think… but I got tired of Pallies after that… at some point you want to feel the thrill of a near death experience.
With a Mage it’s a near death experience around every corner…
