Buffing Mages: A Short History
I am a little disappointed in my Magely Blog colleagues at the moment, it’s all Q to the power of Q.
Sure it’s nerf to cover up the nerf that we noticed while another nerf was being slipped in, but let’s be a bit more positive about this.
What other class can claim such a high level of energy has been expended on it’s one signature (now sadly ignored) spell.
In the beginning there were sheep, sheep and more sheep.
This was the time before raid markings, so picking one Mage’s sheep from another (yes there would be more than one Mage in a raid group) Mage’s sheep was nigh on impossible.
Thankfully Blizzard heard the call and buffed Mages!
Why have lamb roast, when you could have pork roast instead… To ensure the uniqueness of this buff, Blizzard made it a quest reward from a Zone that no one went to and a quest that no one completed… assuming they found it, and it didn’t bug out on them. Ironically, the objective was to sheep mobs, then break your own sheep… rofl.. the jokes on Mages!
Of course Mage’s are renowned for their QQ, so Blizzard stepped up to the plate once again, buffing the Mage’s abilities with a delicious turtle stew. Wisely Blizzard made this difficult to gain. One needed mates in high places, or a bucket load of gold to pick up the Polymorph Turtle spell.
With Lich King on the Horizon, and the overwhelming quantity of QQ from Mages about OP Locks during Burning Crusade, Blizzard knew they needed to step forward and shower Mages with buffs. They wouldn’t stand to be ignored any longer.
Incoming buffs included
Penguins… it made sense to buff Mages by giving them Penguins.. hell they are everywhere, they are given to us as non-combat pets, you can lure them with biscuits, so why not let a Mage get a small slice of the Penguin Pie.
Ohh and those silly Mages keep screaming out for familiars… well, when is a black cat familiar not a familiar… when it’s a sheep of course! Plz gief 650 gold!
But, before those dark Horde toons start QQ’ing about how everything favors the Alliance, let’s give a Horde flavored sheep as well, I mean Snake… All the goodness of sheep plus added reptilian features. Plz gief 650 gold!
3.1 approaches… pages of buffs for other classes, something needs to be given to Mages, something to assure them of their value and place in the game. Something that really let’s them know what Blizzard thinks of them. Ohh yeah, they are the bunny… the silly class that innocently waits for the good stuff… let’s give them a rabbit polymorph…
Wait… maybe they will notice the incoming Spirit Nerf.. damn I mean Buff… Quick, look over there… is that a polar bear cub polymorph! (Thanks for the heads up Tuna!)
While hunting for details on all these buffs, what did I discover…
If only there was a reason to have Polymorph on our action bars these days…. Seriously… if Mages aren’t the bunnies of this game… we sure as hell are the Turkeys!
OK, so that’s the history of Blizzard buffs to Mages… probably the only buff left outstanding is to give Mages Polymoph: Mage. That will be a buff… Converts target (casting Mage) into Polymorphed Mage allowing healing…
Naah… it’s too much like that other novelty spell: Mirror Image.

Q to the power of Q!
Would you call that… Qubed?
Eh? Eh?
It’s QQ like you’ve never seen it before… Q DIMENSIONAL.
(Pick up your special QD classes at the theatre entrance).
XD
You sir, make me proud to be a mage.
“pages of buffs for other classes”
I agree with your point about mages (but I don’t agree that you really need buffs in the first place), but as mainly a resto druid I really need to stop you here. On our pages of buffs, we got:
Our spell costs doubled
Our mana regen halved
Our crit chance halved
Needed GCDs to be useful doubled
And feral:
Our health bonus halved
Our armor bonus halved
So yes, mages haven’t gotten the best of attention, but you are not nearly getting the worst.
@Euripedes: I was trying to come up with something… Qubed rocks… and Q DIMENSIONAL… Well I think there are some Engineering goggles that will suit just fine.
@Rhii: lol, Do I? Happy to hear you are proud to be a Mage… wondering why this humble Gnome would make you feel so.
@Deloimoi: I don’t think we are the worst… but us Mages have a reputation for QQ (to the point of Qubed), and I had to get me a little piece of that pie… albeit in a silly way….
But you do have to ask… 9 versions of the same spell… all cosmetic changes… It’s cute, and I did call for it a while back (joking, honestly), but I figure real positive changes to 8 other spells, not just throwing a Critter skin over an existing spell, would be a lot more palatable to Mages.
So come on Blizz… Buff Droods and Gnome Mages!
mages get 37 flavors of “sheep” but every male tauren druid becomes the exact same cat or bear or turkey or tree.
SCANDAL!
@ixobelle: I’ll trade you 3 of our polymorph forms for one of your Druid forms…
Mmmm which one to choose….
Flying I think… a Gnome with wings would look like Cupid!
[...] I even suggested that I was Q’ing to the power of Q, or as Rip would say, Qubed! [...]
