Points don’t win games, goals do
The Aussie Rules (AFL) Grand Final was held over the weekend. I guess this is the Australian equivalent of the super bowl
It was a great game, even for someone like me that can live without football. The first 3 quarters were very close, usually only a matter of a few points between the 2 teams, but in the end it was the Hawks (Hawthorn) that won the game and the trophy.
I didn’t have anything invested in either team. At least my team wasn’t on the bottom of the ladder for the 1st time in a couple of years, but they definitely weren’t in the big game.
Early on, in fact most the the game the Cats (Geelong) dominated the field, but whenever the ball got to their front line one of two things happened:
- They lost the ball, or
- They missed the goals and only got a point.
At this moment I will very quickly explain scoring. There are 4 posts at each end of the field. If you kick the ball through the center two posts, then you score a goal – which is worth 6 points. If you miss, but get it through the other posts, you score a single point.

So nearly every time the Cats scored, they scored a point. The Hawks, on the other hand, kicked goals nearly every time the ball made it to their forward line.
Both sides defended well, but one side converted their goal attempts much better. If the Cats had been more accurate, they would have slaughtered the Hawks. Just look at the number of scoring kicks, the Cats had the opportunities, but the Hawks won the game.
So what has this got to do with WoW?
Only the concept that you could throw everything you have got at near misses, the 1% wipes, or
You can play it smarter, be on your game, and when the shot comes at the boss, make it count, kick a goal
One goal (clean kill) is worth more than 6 points (failed or even messy kills). Time spent on points is time that could be spent on more goals, other bosses, other raids etc.
Enough Gnome philosophy.
Gnomer and Out!
