Twinking your level 19 Warlock: Part 5. Twink Spells
<< Part 4. Enchanting your Twink
In this section I will briefly discuss the “few” spells at the disposal of a young Warlock Twink. If you were to level past 20, there would be many more options available to you, including pets, but if you are reading this, you have decided you want the challenge of limiting your game-given skills and heightening your real-life skills.
I have broken the spells down into 3 groups, Offensive, Defensive/Utility & Pet Summons.
Two notes.
- These are the base, untalented spells. The next part of the guide will discuss talents and their effect on the spells you choose to cast.
- These spells (and the talents that effect them) may be changing in WoLK. I stick my hand in the air and admit I am not looking towards WoLK at the moment.
Offensive
Bread and butter of Dot, Dot, Dot, Fear, Dot, Dot, Dead combat (which some will tell you is cowardly Lock tactics.. stand and fight they say… Run and die you reply)
Needless to say, this isn’t just an offensive spell, it is also defensive.
Applications (beyond the bleedingly obvious)
- Flag running – Help your flag carrier by fearing the chasers. You can only fear 1 at a time, but that wont stop you chain fearing multiple targets to give your flag carrier some breathing yards.
- Flag Defending – Can’t grab the flag if you are running like a little… ummm… Gnome.
- Flag Defending – Can’t run the flag if you are running in the wrong direction.
- General defense & offense – Their healers wont heal if they are running, and you can give your healers some breathing space.
Remember this might break on damage, so get ready to run… or Fear again!
Fire Offense, 2 second cast had a dot.
Cast and Fear, Fear and Cast
Slow down the damage that those melee types are laying about.
Throw this on the target you aren’t focusing on at the moment to help out those who are focusing on it (and help your healers out a bit).
Remember, only 1 curse per target per Warlock
Your big nuke, 2.8 second cast, which is a long time to be sitting around, but may be worthwhile against that feared opponent
Did someone say “Dot, Dot, Dot, Fear, Dot, Dot, Dead”
Most likely you will be picking up 5/5 Improved Corruption in your talents, so another insta-cast dot.
Curse of Recklessness (Rank 1)
Increases melee attack power – this is OK if the opponent is mindlessly laying into your tank.
Reduces armor – great if they are also getting a bit of melee love from your comrades
Ignore Fear – sounds bad, but maybe you just don’t want them to run too far away.. another Fear in the works?
Not likely that your opponent is going to sit still and let you drain them right?
Damn shame if they are running around like a headless raptor!
Of course, this might be both good & bad in the heat of battle. Good if you aren’t being focused, bad if someone stops to follow the little squiggly line back to your black heart.
Too much health, not enough Mana?
I am sure you already know how to use this, I will say no more.
I keep hearing this echo… “Dot, Dot, Dot, Fear, Dot, DOT, Dead”
Probably not so good on the opponent your surprise at 1/2 health, you want the last tick, but it’s another insta-cast death-dot.
1.5 second cast… now we are talking PvP timed casts.
Pile up the dots, throw a few of these while on the move, feast.
Remember, this spell causes a high amount of threat
- Against PC’s you gained a high amount of threat by joining the battleground.. you are a Lock, therefore you are a target, otherwise threat is irrelevant
- Against Pets, different story, they still have threat tables. So may be good for pulling the pet off your pet healer.
Defensive/Utility
Pffft, 100 health for a twink is a last ditch effort, still, 100 health is 100 health
Can be improved with talent Improved Healthstone, this is one of the many decisions I will leave to you.
Warning: Requires Soulshard!
Derrr, tell us something we don’t know… yeah but how do you get more Soul Shards… killing Mobs (and yes PC opponents).
Beware the trap of using all your Soul Shards and grinding more off mobs… you will gain XP, you will soon be a level 20 nobody!
Grab them off BG opponents whenever possible, they are free shards.
So on that basis, I wont cry if you aren’t sharing them around like lollies with your team mates – it would be a good idea for your team, but maybe not for your Soul Shard bank balance.
Don’t leave home (or Spirit Healer) without it.
Increased Armour = less damage.
5 health every 5 seconds = survivability, mana, laughing at your opponent’s corpses.
You need Soul Shards, and you need them XP free, so use this, but use it wisely.
Once again you will be producing a beautiful rope for your opponents to wrap around your neck. Time it well and it wont be around long enough to see.
Feed the Pet blood, your blood unfortunately, but there may be occasions when this is worthwhile.
eg: your pet tanking someone else’s pet (the one you just pulled off the healer), don’t want to loose that Soul Shard due to dead pet? It may be better for you and your pet to die together, and get rez’ed together.
Not much water in WSG?
No, but there are lots of nasty buff “stealing” opponents around, so lay this one on your team liberally.
There is a time and a place for an insta-in-battle rez.
Generally you will be taking the free health and mana (and pet) load from the spirit healer, but if you are the last thing standing between your nearly dead opponent capping or not, then you better be coming back from the dead, there and then!
Pet
Really nothing I can tell you about this you don’t already know. Depending on what BG tactics you go with you will either have your Imp or your blueberry out.. just make sure you have one, and at least the Imp doesn’t cost Soul Shards
See above.
Next time I will delve into a few different talent options, and the effect they will have on your spells and playstyle.

Maybe I should get my level 1 Lock up to 19 after all
At the moment he will remain relegated to bank duties but once I finish mucking about with my druid and warrior he may get a look in, and this will be the first place I come for my warlock twink strats!
