OK, so my post on When is enough, enough? got me wondering.
If our gear is going to be redundant 1 hour after the release of WoLK, then where is the future value of “stock” that can be squirrelled away waiting for the release.
- Gear- fundamentally worthless
- Badges – Unknown
- Honor- Assuming it persists, it is unlikely that a new season will coincide with the release, so it will hold it’s value, but only against a new season, and assuming there isn’t another reward revamp.
- Badges- worthless for current gear, so will there new be new badge gear released with WoLK?
- Crafting patterns- I assume, like last release, that level 70 Rare & Epic patterns will hold no value in the future. The current epic level 70 pattern will be nothing but an expensive levelling item (assuming the mats are available), or a completest collectors item.
- Darkmoon cards – Once again an assumption, but I expect these will be nothing more that a collectors item, best case a money trap for the unwary AH investor.
- Raw Tradeskill Mats- I expect these will continue to hold their value for the normal reasons. Powerlevelling and people trying to progress their character level, not regress their farming.
- Enchanting Mats- for the main, the same as tradeskill mats, but I would expect a large influx of void crystals or Large Prismatic shards, as people (well enchanters at least) divest themselves of their previously epic level 70 gear, and pick up the Green level 71 gear.
- Gems- Gem crafters may see an increase in business, even in the old “blue quality” gems as people pick up and throw away new gear.
- Death Knights- What will DeathKnights require from crafters and the AH? I expect a lot of people will “reroll” deathknight, if only to try it out – so maybe there is a future untapped market.
- Inscriptions- Anyone got any idea what current mats will be in demand for people powerlevelling inscripting?
I’m not sure what I am going to do, but I guess as a starting point, I should divest myself of anything in the bank that is purple. The time will come, if it hasn’t already, where people will avoid pretty purples on the AH, saving the cash for ugly greens.
I begin to think that the world will very soon be in a holding pattern.
Gnomer and Out!

It’s happening all over again!
NB: I saw the BC coming and I hung up my boots, only to return early this year. What I saw when I returned was the aftermath of the BC, in particular what it did to my bank full of items!
My predictions are thus: Enchanting mats – they coming down in price big time, in particular voids and large prismatics. There will be heaps going around from all the old gear getting retired, and they won’t be in as high demand because all the cool new enchants will require the new mats. Don’t get caught with a bank full of void crystals only to find they are now only worth 5g.
Do you know how many nexus crystals I had when I logged back in? And how many I had 3 weeks later when I had retired my lv 60 epics! Those things used to be worth good money
Badges: I suspect there will be a new type of badges for a new set of badge gear. That or maybe there will be super expensive badge gear and the new instance bosses will drop buckets of them.
Honor and arena points: Save save save. My ages old honor was still good after the BC had been around for a year or so, and having a stockpile when WotLK hits might be a quick way to gear up with lv 80 items.
Crafting patterns: next to worthless. Pattern for robe of the archmage anyone? You could hardly sell it for 10g nowadays.
Id say now is a good time to work on a farmer alt. Get a skinner, miner and herbalist up to level 70 because the lv 80 gathered materials are going to be in high demand!
Damnit I don’t have any farmer alts.
IMO there is only a couple of things that are around right now that are going to be in high demand at WoLK time … Gold, did I mention gold? The other things that I think we will need the different cloths that high level tailors can make … But even that will not be for long, mainly for the leveling process of tailoring … Although I would hold onto Nightmare vine, Dreaming Glory, Golden Sansam and Felweed … The last thing you want to do is have to stop to farm so you can make mana pots while leveling … or worse have to buy them from me

Actually just sold this the other day on Staghelm for 250G. There will always be people who feel the need to have every pattern, every recipe possible. Go for the gold and honor!
True.. I know I have forked out a bit of spare gold on the odd thing… 250g nice score. Actually I think I purchased one at a inflated price soon after TBC, not realising the current worth (or lack of).. old Auctioneer data.
So I know the recipe too…
But I think I have now picked up all the enchanting recipes and most of the tailoring ones, no matter how useless.
A friend of mine is only missing 3 alchemy recipes… they are BoP, but he still wants them
